Practical Management, Emerging Evidence and Technologic Advances in Small Cell Lung Cancer

This session will discuss current evidence and emerging treatment options in the management of SCLC. An overview of SCLC will be provided including definitions, staging, epidemiology, pathology and other general considerations. Pertinent controversies in limited stage SCLC, such as the timing of radiation, commonly delivered dose fractionations and the use of prophylactic cranial irradiation will be discussed. In extensive stage SCLC, the pros and cons of consolidative thoracic radiation as well as prophylactic cranial irradiation will be highlighted. Finally, the role of emerging radiation treatments, such as hippocampal sparing prophylactic cranial irradiation and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy will be considered.

Target Audience

This continuing medical education activity is designed to meet the interests of radiation oncologists, radiation oncology residents, radiation biologists, radiation physicists, dosimetrists, oncologists working in related specialties, radiation therapists, radiation oncology nurses, radiation oncology administrators, diagnostic radiologists and all other health professionals involved in the field of radiation oncology.

Learning Objectives

After this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Describe the evidence for the curative, palliative and prophylactic role of radiation in small cell lung cancer.
  • Be familiar with the role of advanced radiation techniques such as hippocampal-sparing prophylactic cranial irradiation and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy in small cell lung cancer.
