Lessons From HyTEC: Brain Necrosis, Optic Neuropathy and Brachial Plexopathy After Stereotactic Radiotherapy

HyTEC (Hypo-fractionated or “Hy”-dose per fraction, Treatment Effects in the Clinic) was an American Association of Physicists in Medicine-led initiative focusing on hypofractionated SBRT/SABR and stereotactic radiosurgery in adults. HyTEC was published as special issues in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology · Biology · Physics, with introductory and visionary papers along with organ-specific reports that compiled and modelled (when feasible) data specific to normal tissue complication probability risks.

This presentation focuses on three projects – brain necrosis, radiation-induced optic neuropathy and brachial plexopathy (published separately outside of the HYTEC special issue). The approach to compiling and modelling data as well as the results will be reviewed. Particular attention will be drawn to the limitation of the work, and how those limitations might affect interpretation of the data, and how one might apply the results in clinic.

  • Describe the methodology and approach of the HyTEC projects.
  • Explain some of the limitations of the HyTEC work on brain necrosis, radiation-induced optic neuropathy and brachial plexopathy.
  • Discuss how to use the data from HyTEC in clinic to help guide assessment of treatment plans.
