Keynote I: Overcoming Structural Barriers to Diverse Representation and Clinical Trials

Dr. Carmen Guerra presents on the persistent racial and ethnic disparities that exist in patient access to clinical trials in head and neck oncology. She describes the extent of the representation gap and provide examples of successful programs in place that are actively improving the status quo. Participants will leave able to more optimally collect and report on data on race and ethnicity, and with ideas to engage with their local communities to work towards the FDA’s diversity action plan with respect to head and neck oncology.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Improve the accuracy of race and ethnicity data collection in clinical trials.
  • Approach work with communities to partner on clinical trial awareness and recruitment with humility and mutual respect.
  • Use tools described in the lecture to work with your home institutions to operationalize aspects of the FDA’s diversity action plan.
