How to Optimally Deliver Vaginal Cuff Brachytherapy for Endometrial Cancer in Your Practice: Tips and Tricks From the Experts

Vaginal cuff brachytherapy (VBT) is a critical part of a radiation oncologist's practice and is routinely offered both at academic sites and within the community. However, in the modern era, many are stretched increasingly thin and have fewer resources to work with. This series consists of two parts: 1) how to appropriately make recommendations for VBT for endometrial cancer and 2) efficiently deliver high-quality VBT in one's practice. Following this series, learners will effectively be able to implement a successful VBT at their program.

TOPICS COVERED:

Each topic is available as an onDemand recording.

  • Practical Aspects of Vaginal Brachytherapy for Endometrial Cancer
  • New Trials and Future Directions in Endometrial Cancer and Vaginal Cuff Brachytherapy

Please see the Program tab for session descriptions and presenters.

This activity is available from July 29, 2024 through 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on September 10, 2026.

The content was originally presented and recorded as a live webinar series on September 4 and September 11, 2024.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the interests of radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncology residents.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Define who are (and who are not) appropriate candidates for VBT.
  • Implement a successful VBT within their program.
  • Better understand how to approach endometrial cancer cases in their clinical practice.
  • Recognize the underutilization of brachytherapy.
  • Discuss treatment disparities and access to patients.
  • Identify challenges faced in light of new immunotherapy clinical trials.
  • Incorporate adjuvant radiation therapy into current practice in the context of new clinical data.
  • Understand the practical and technical aspects of vaginal brachytherapy.
  • Articulate the molecular factors influencing how we care for endometrial cancer patients.

New Trials and Future Directions in Endometrial Cancer and Vaginal Cuff Brachytherapy

Idalid Ivy Franco, MD, MPH; Matthew Harkenrider, MD

This activity reviews 1) the guidelines and standards of care for the adjuvant management of endometrial cancer with an emphasis on vaginal brachytherapy 2) how to incorporate adjuvant radiation therapy into current practice in the context of new clinical data 3) practical treatment approaches and technical aspects of vaginal brachytherapy 4) access to care for endometrial cancer patients and 5) the molecular factors influencing how we care for endometrial cancer patients. Difficult cases are presented and attendees have the opportunity to ask questions of panelists to better understand how to approach such cases in their own clinical practice.

Practical Aspects of Vaginal Brachytherapy for Endometrial Cancer
— Lara Hathout, MD, FRCPC; Matthew Harkenrider, MD

In this activity we review the practical aspects of VBT planning including choice of applicators, dose, prescription and planning. We include and discuss cases and provide tips to build a brachytherapy program. In addition, we highlight the underutilization of brachytherapy, disparity in treatment and access to patients. Finally, we discuss the challenges being faced in light of new immunotherapy clinical trials.
