Clinical Controversies: Throw ‘caution’ to the wind? Discussion of challenging cases for accelerated partial breast irradiation on demand webinar

Clinical Controversies: Throw ‘caution’ to the wind? Discussion of challenging cases for accelerated partial breast irradiation webinar was recorded on September 12, 2017 and features Gary M. Freedman, MD and Eleanor Harris, MD.

There is a need to develop consensus on patient selection and methods of treatment for accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI).  The consensus guidelines by ASTRO will be presented with an emphasis on the recent update.  The results of recent prospective and randomized trials and how they may impact decision making also will be discussed.  Several cases of patients that highlight these challenges in patient selection and treatment options for APBI versus whole breast radiation versus omission of radiation will be presented for discussion with the audience and faculty.

Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the interests of radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, and radiation dosimetrists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify clinical cases of early stage breast cancer that are potentially eligible for accelerated partial breast irradiation, whole breast radiation, and or omission of radiation.
  • Differentiate clinical and pathological eligibility criteria for accelerated partial breast irradiation into categories of suitability based upon current ASTRO guidelines.
  • Contrast the different methods currently used for accelerated partial breast irradiation.
