AM2018 EDU19 Advances in Cervical Cancer

This session will review the current oncogenesis, prevention, detection, workup and initial therapeutic approach to women with cervical cancer. Special attention will be paid to practical considerations in the design of conformal external beam volumes, the use of chemotherapy and the integration of advanced imaging into brachytherapy planning, particularly MRI. Many of these technologies offer the possibilities with improving the efficacy of treatment while reducing the potential for injury, therefore improving the overall value of radiation therapy in the treatment of this disease.

Target Audience

The meeting is designed to meet the interests of radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncology residents, radiation physicists, nurses, radiation therapists, and radiation dosimetrists.

Learning Objectives

  • State the oncogenesis, prevention, workup and initial management of cervical cancer.
  • Design optimal external beam volumes for treatment of the pelvis and para-aortic chains, and appropriately integrate chemotherapy if required.
  • Review the need and benefits of brachytherapy, as well as to understand the concepts behind image guided brachytherapy, including optimal dosing for tumor control and prevention of toxicity.
