2021 Annual Meeting - Radiation oncologists’ role in promoting person-centered care in the curative and palliative settings

The session begins with case studies involving suboptimal multidisciplinary care, which translates into detrimental effects for the patients involved.

Rachel Jimenez will discuss the ethical principles underlying person-centered care (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice), in the context of our encounters with individual patients, health care systems, and our responsibilities to society. This will include a discussion of how patient experiences, shared decision-making, and the informed consent process are shaped not only by individual physicians, but by how well a multidisciplinary team functions as a unit.

Karen Hoffman will discuss how radiation oncologists can bring a person-centered experience to the curative setting, with an emphasis on approaches to integrating radiation oncologists into multidisciplinary clinics and establishing relationships with other providers that enables patients to meet with a radiation oncologist prior to undergoing definitive treatment for their malignancy.

Tracy Balboni will then discuss how radiation oncologists can bring a person-centered experience to the palliative setting, with an emphasis on facilitating timely referrals, building relationships with palliative care physicians, and incorporating goals of care into treatment decisions. In each of these presentations there will be further discussion on being a good role model for person-centered treatment approaches in our decisions on the radiation-treatment modality and dose-fractionation used, following the patients we treat, helping to manage recurrences and side effects, and approaches to shared decision-making in different clinical contexts.

Finally, Malcolm Mattes will present pathways for educating peers in other specialties about radiation oncology, as well as practical interventions to raise awareness about radiation oncology.

Target Audience

The activity is designed to meet the interests of radiation oncologists and radiation oncology residents.
