Ethics in Radiation Oncology - 2017

This would be a SA-CME panel course that would have approximately twenty minute sessions on: Fundamental principles of medical ethics (mindfulness, empathy, compassion, phronesis, competence, treating patients as ends in themselves rather than as means to other ends, etc), Organizational structure of medical ethics (AMA Council on Judicial and Ethical Affairs and ASTRO Ethics Committee), Ethical issues in publications (research, duplicative submissions, conflicts of interest, plagiarism, self-citation, etc), Ethical issues in practice structure (self-referral, restrictive covenants, treatment of junior staff/associates), Ethical issues in clinical practice (fractionation, patient referral, etc)

Target Audience

This continuing medical education activity is designed to meet the interests of radiation oncologists, radiation oncology residents, radiation biologists, radiation physicists, dosimetrists, oncologists working in related specialties, radiation therapists, radiation oncology nurses, radiation oncology administrators, diagnostic radiologists and all other health professionals involved in the field of radiation oncology.

Learning Objectives

After this session, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand the structure by which medicine (e.g., AMA Council on Judicial and Ethical Affairs) and ASTRO address ethical issues.
  • Understand a framework by which business, clinical research and publication questions are analyzed under a ‘medical ethics paradigm’.
  • Understand how to access medical ethics resources.
