What I Wish I Knew in the Early Career Period

This activity, sponsored by the ASTRO Early Career Committee, provides learners with opportunities to engage with common topics crucial in the early career period, including contract negotiation, financial planning and academic promotion. The activity features three short didactic talks followed by a longer portion of an open discussion to allow for maximum engagement between learners and speakers. This activity addresses common topics of interest identified across early career focus groups performed by the Early Career Committee. These topics directly impact physician wellness and the speakers come from the spectrum of practice settings. Due to the nature of this activity, we rely on personal experiences rather than data. However, the presenters are able to provide culturally sensitive, diverse, and tailored advice for advancement for different individual circumstances. We have a subject matter expert in financial planning present accurate and balanced information, instead of relying on anecdotal experience from other members. This activity’s discussion revolves around tailored best practices to negotiate and progress in one’s career across a number of diverse circumstances. We provide a balanced road map to career advancement both in the community setting, as well as an academic setting. We present information and strategies for all participants in diverse settings to improve their career prospects so that they are better able to care for their patients. Opacity and lack of information is a key systemic barrier for many to achieve promotion or partnership, which this activity directly addresses.
