
KASTRO/KOSRO Joint Activity: Radiation Therapy for Nonmalignant Disease: Transcontinental Perspectives on Newer Indications from Korea and the United States
While best known for its use in cancer, radiotherapy (RT) can be used as a successful treatment for several nonmalignant diseases. Nonetheless, the use of non-oncological RT is uncommon, and its utilization varies from country to country. Even though the use of RT for nonmalignant disease has been investigated since the discovery of X-ray, new indications are being explored, especially with the development of new technologies. Jointly sponsored by the Korean American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (KASTRO) and the Korean Society for Radiation Oncology (KOSRO), this activity aims to share transcontinental perspectives from Korea and the United States on emerging areas of RT use for nonmalignant disease, including refractory osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and refractory ventricular tachycardia. This activity is particularly timely given the aging population of patients suffering from these conditions, with Korean researchers leading efforts to develop new whole-brain RT delivery technology for Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to a discussion of current evidence and future research opportunities, practical considerations for equitable patient selection, optimal treatment planning/delivery, and program development in diverse academic and community settings in two different countries are explored.
