Contouring for Thoracic Cancer

This activity provides a practical, case-based review of contemporary thoracic target and organ-at-risk delineation, with a particular focus on critical mediastinal and central thoracic structures. Optimal motion-management pathways, including practical aspects of respiratory gating and deep inspiration breath-hold techniques are reviewed. The activity also highlights practical considerations for simulation, treatment planning (including dose constraints), and treatment delivery, to ensure accurate, reproducible thoracic radiotherapy while minimizing dose to critical organs at risk.

The content was originally presented and recorded at the 2026 ASTRO Annual Refresher Course

This activity includes a didactic background lecture and case/contour review. It does not include the hands-on practice cases.

This activity is available from July 16, 2026, through July 15, 2028.

Target Audience

This course is designed to meet the interest of radiation oncologists. radiation physicists and radiation oncology residents.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Describe and perform contouring for central and ultra-central lung cases.
  • Identify resources for thoracic/lung cancer contouring of critical organs at risk.
  • Implement learned simulation, contouring, and treatment planning techniques in clinical practice.
