Operations and Impact of a Specialty-specific National Incident Learning System: Ten Years of RO-ILS

This educational activity will introduce participants to the structure of RO-ILS as a comprehensive national incident learning program to house information regarding incidents and other patient safety events under the protection of a Patient Safety Organization. It then details various educational materials generated from the data therein to spread awareness about patient safety issues to the greater radiation oncology community.

Target Audience

This course is designed to meet the interest of radiation oncologists, physicists, nurses, radiation therapists, radiation dosimetrists and radiation oncology residents.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the purpose and structure of RO-ILS as a comprehensive incident learning system to improve patient safety in radiation oncology.
  2. Identify available educational materials issued from the RO-ILS program and apply them to their clinical practice workflows.
  3. Explain the current limitations of RO-ILS as it exists today and potential forthcoming solutions.
